Court suspends mining near Marmaris

A court in the southwestern province of Muğla suspended mining operations near the village of Osmaniye late Monday based on an application filed by local authorities.

The Energy Ministry had approved the mining license for the firm, Neslişah, in an area near the village of Osmaniye, in the Marmaris region, which is an important honey-producing region. Local authorities and the Agriculture Ministry objected, arguing that mining in the area would cause significant damage to honey production, olive orchards and safari tourism.

Mining will be suspended until the Energy Ministry submits its defense to the court.

The company had already cut down about 900 pine trees, used by bees in their production of honey, with the Agriculture Ministry arguing that the firm would need to cut down 20,000 more.
